Course Overview

A School IT Solutions Technician is a pivotal role within the school. They develop, implement and maintain complete IT solutions as part of a multidisciplinary team, including hardware infrastructures and software.
The aim of the apprenticeship is for learners to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be able to adopt a professional methodology to gather and analyse requirements, to design, develop, test, and implement IT solutions and to provide ongoing support both directly to end-users and for the underlying IT services.
The specific tasks undertaken vary depending on what needs to be achieved by the team at any particular time. Some tasks may be very technical, others may be more analytical, school or user-focused. Many such teams will be modern “DevOps” style teams, which carry out the full set of stages across the whole solution cycle: requirements gathering, solution development, testing, implementation and ongoing support.
All apprentices take a common core and then choose one of two options, IT Hardware or IT Software.

Qualification Achieved

On completion of this apprenticeship, you will hold a level 3 apprenticeship in IT Solutions Technician.
Additional qualifications achieved include:

  • Level 2 and/or 3 English and Maths
  • Entry onto the BCS
  • Entry to the Chartered Institute for IT

Progression

The role may act as a gateway to further career and training opportunities, including, but not limited to:

  • School Infrastructure Technician L3
  • School Digital Support Technician
  • Digital and Technology Solutions Professional

Learning & Assessment

Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary.

Additionally, each learner will be paired with a workplace mentor who will collaborate with the tutor and learner, offering expertise and guidance to facilitate skill development.

The mentor will provide support, constructive feedback, and assist in various tasks the learner will undertake, such as:

  • Knowledge assignments
  • Case studies
  • Reports
  • Reflective accounts
  • Professional discussions
  • Workplace witness testimonies
  • Observations, either onsite or remote, will be conducted by the tutor as required by the course.

End Point Assessment

Each learner will undergo ongoing assessment throughout the duration of their programme. The methods in which this apprenticeship are assessed are:

  • Knowledge Test
  • Project and Interview

If the employee is under 19 and your business has fewer than 50 employees, there will be no cost for the training. If they are over 19 and/or your business has over 50 employees then you will contribute 5% towards the cost of the training. For any businesses paying into the levy, all training costs will be covered.
